I had a completely seized and stripped 8mm hex head plug in my 2JZ block. I needed the plug removed so I could run my water to air oil cooler. Almost immediately on attempting to remove the plug, the internal hex stripped (25 years in the block). I tried EVERYTHING (heat, penetrant, hammers, bigger plugs, wobble hex, torx, double hex, etc.) to no avail. My efforts succeeded in totally mangling the inside of the plug. Checked Amazon for extractors and this had the best overall reviews, especially with heavily seized bolts. I put a tiny bit of lube, hammered in the closest size extractor, and it tightened in the plug which was very seized. Applied about 75-100 lb ft of torque and broke the plug loose. Took literally less than one minute. The extractor is undamaged and I don't have to spend a ton of time and money trying other methods (e.g. drilling the plug, welding, etc.). What can I say except that this product saved me big time. I bought a Toyota Tacoma Trail Edition with those silly bed storage boxes held in place by the bed rails and a bed screw (look it up). Had a pressure sensor break in a pretty confined space. Not enough room to use an easy out and very limited access. My '07 Prius has a hex bolt for the transmission. I had stripped it trying to take it off with a regular hex socket. These worked very well for that. It was on there super tight. The valve seats in old (early 1960's in this case) Kohler Niedecken Shower Valves can be replaced. It is an easy job, unless you strip the hex shape off of the valve seat. I had tried several methods to get the stuck seat out of my shower valve to stop the leaking, but to no avail. I finally saw this set and thought I would give it one more try. Will this work on a bolt that's snapped off flush? +

That's one of the two cases it's built for. Center-punch the stub, drill a pilot hole down the middle, then drive the extractor in. The reverse spiral cuts its own grip inside the hole, so there's nothing left to slip out of.

Should I get the 10PCS or the 25PCS? +

The 10PCS covers 1/8" to 13/32" — the sizes that handle most car, mower and household bolts. The 25PCS runs the same design up to 7/8", which is what you need for suspension, axle and heavy equipment bolts. If you work on your own vehicles more than twice a year, the 25PCS is the one you won't have to buy again later.

Which size do I need? +

You don't measure the bolt. Drill the largest pilot hole the broken bolt will take without cutting into the surrounding thread, then pick the extractor stamped with that same size.

The number on each extractor is the diameter of its spiral tip, which is also the pilot drill size it needs. The bolt you are removing is always larger than that number — the extractor works from inside a hole drilled in the bolt.

If the head is still there and only the Allen socket is rounded out, skip the drilling: pick the extractor that sits snug in the recess.

What tools do I need? +

A 1/2" socket on an impact wrench, ratchet or breaker bar. The extractor body is a 1/2" hex, so it's driven by a socket rather than a drill chuck. You only need a drill if the bolt snapped off flush and you have to make a pilot hole first.

My Allen bolt is rounded out. Do I have to drill it? +

No. The rounded socket is already your pilot hole. Pick the extractor that sits snug in the recess, tap it in, and turn counter-clockwise. This is the fastest case the kit handles.

Will the extractor break off inside the bolt? +

These are heat-treated so the tool stays harder than the fastener. Turn it steadily with a 1/2" socket and let the spiral bite — an extractor is far more likely to snap when it is shock-loaded or forced sideways than when it is turned under steady pressure.

What about the 14PCS socket set? +

Different tool for a different failure. The extractor kits bite into a bolt that's snapped or stripped on the inside. The 14PCS set grips nuts and bolt heads that are rounded off on the outside. Most people working on cars end up needing both, which is why they're bundled above.
